Our MPA Master of Public Administration course equips modern public managers and policy-makers with the skills needed to make a decisive contribution to contemporary governance and policy.

Delivered jointly between the Management Centre, School of Media, Culture & Society and the School of Business & Enterprise (UK), the course combines a rigorous social science focus on:

  • Governance

  • Public administration

  • Public policy and politics

  • Public sector management and strategy

This award reflects the changing nature of the policy-maker or public manager’s role, with its emphasis on public policy and governance as well as the traditional business and strategy focus. As such the programme will equip students to make a decisive contribution in a range of relevant fields.


Throughout the course, our academics enable you to build links with our existing partners in the public sector and with wider civil society and public sector bodies. The programme offers you the opportunity to enhance your CV by undertaking a practice-based project as part of your final dissertation in collaboration with a public or third sector organisation.

  • Power, Politics and Civil Society

  • Policy Analysis & Practice

This is followed by a 60-credit Dissertation in which you will conduct a piece of sustained independent research.


There are no written examinations on our course and you will develop transferrable skills in order to be equipped for graduate-level employment.


Assessment will be a combination of:

  • Class presentation

  • Peer-review assessments

  • Role plays

  • Reporting writing (briefings papers and extended versions)

  • Essay writing

Our course provides a rich variety of integrated learning and assessment opportunities and experiences, increasing discipline knowledge and understanding while developing key transferable skills.
