First Work Based Learning Graduates in Northern Cyprus:
Turkish Cypriots Recieve Doctorate Degrees from Middlesex University
Three Turkish Cypriot students received Doctorate Degrees from Middlesex University’s Work Based Learning Programme (WBL) which is administered by The Management Centre. The graduation ceremony took place in Nicosia on 29th October 2010. At the ceremony, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics of Middlesex University Professor Margaret House presented degree awards to 28 Doctoral and Masters WBL graduates from Cyprus. Professor House congratulated the graduates and said that their work based studies play an important role in today’s competitive, knowledge-based economy.
First Turkish Cypriot Graduates:
Zehra and Fahriye Altınay, senior instructors in the education faculty at Near East University, and Bilinç Dolmacı, Programme Manager at the Management Centre in Nicosia, received doctoral degrees from Middlesex University’s WBL Programme during the ceremony and became the first Turkish Cypriot graduates of this programme.
In 2005 the Management Centre began offering WBL Master and Doctoral programmes in Northern Cyprus. The Management Centre, located in Nicosia, is involved in the provision of training, research and professional development. Currently, 14 students are participating in WBL studies. Middlesex University in London is a pioneer in the field of WBL in higher education. WBL learning programmes are modular, delivered by parttime study and focused on work based projects designed to be of direct benefıt to the employer-organization.
Middlesex is one of the largest universities in the UK, with 24,000 students studying on its London campuses and around 2,000 staff. Moreover, with established WBL centres in Ireland, Greece, Cyprus (north and south) and Hong Kong – and additional centres planned for the near future – the global reach of Middlesex’s Work Based Learning is expanding each year.
