The “ENGAGE- Do your part for peace” project, implemented by The Management Centre and the NGO Support Centre, is organising a series of Public Discussions on how education is approached within federal systems. The series of open public discussions will take place on 1st, 2nd and 3rd December in Nicosia, Limassol and Kyrenia respectively. The main objective is to inform citizens about how education systems work in federal states.

The first of the series of events will take place on Wednesday 1st December at the Fulbright Centre, near Ledra Palace, at 7:30-9:30 p.m.

 

The discussion will bring together one international expert and local experts from both communities of the island., namely Mr. Arthur M. Hauptman, an independent public policy consultant specialized in education issues, Dr. Nikos Peristianis, sociologist, and Dr. Birikim Özgür, academic and writer. The speakers have different backgrounds and are experts in a different field relating to federalism and education.

 

The aim of the Public Discussion is to inform citizens about the main aspects of educational system in federal systems, including teaching practices, curricula and policies. The events will provide the opportunity to inform our citizens on how the educational systems work in federal states.During the discussion, Mr. Hauptman will present examples from educational systems in Federation models of Governance and explain by drawing examples from different countries. The presentation will also include examples of educational issues in federal countries and their applicability in the case of Cyprus.

 

The second event will take place in Limassol , at Studio 8, 17-22 Panos Solomonides Street (across from the 2nd Primary School) on Thursday, 2nd December at 7:00 p.m. While the third at the KTÖS Locale, the Primary Teachers’ Union Local Headquarters in Kyrenia on Friday, 3rd of December at 7:00 p.m.. It is indeed a very current subject since more than 40% of the world’s countries operate in federal systems, including Germany, Austria, Spain and Switzerland. During the events there will be simultaneous translation in Turkish and Greek languages.
